I often forget that one of my first love, in addition to writing, is fashion, and (of course) Louis Vuitton, and I remember being a young teen, walking on the Avenue des Champ Elysées, in Paris and doing some window shopping. The bag that would change everything: from my outfits to my life. I do remember crying so much because I couldn't afford it — spoiler alert: I still can't. I actually bought mine second hand a few months ago, and for that I'd like to thank Vestiaire Collective, who made my dream come true. As well as the UK seller, obvi! This lead me to think about another one of my first love: the entertainment industry and how watching tv shows influenced my style! I think mainly about Carrie Bradshaw and her Manolos, or Blair Waldorf and her legendary preppy Paris-inspired aesthetic!
Talking about preppy, you may not know this about me, but I am utterly obsessed with the aesthetic. When I was attending my fashion styling course, back in 2022, one of the moodboard I presented was on the Preppy style. I am nice, so I'll share it with you!
Today, I want to talk about those screen queens who raised me and ignited my love about fashion!
Carrie Bradshaw
This one a little bit controversial. I always associated Carrie’s fashion style to the terms messy, and unorganised chic. Some looks are absolutely awful, and I can only think about the J’adore Dior tee with her purple gown skirt. That was a huge no for me, even though the internet seems to like it — too maximalist. But some looks are just iconic (not to say most of them)! She is wearing white like no one else, always chic and timeless. Her dresses, maxi skirts, I absolutely love it, I’ll be a fan forever.
Her style is quite maximalist, with the accent on the shoes. We know how much she loves her Manolo, right? Her stilettos are her main identity, I don't even know how she manages to do that. She has a lot of statement pieces, and pretty much all her looks have a part of feminity. Yes, even when she just wears a pair of jean and a tank top, there is just something about her aura.
Rachel Green
She's an icon. I don't want to hear otherwise. I mean, do you remember that green dress? ICONIC — and if you don't know what I'm talking about, it's the second picture, top row, on the moodboard I made. Rachel is, with no doubts, one of my favorite characters in tv shows. She's funny, she dresses so well, she is passionate, kind, and her hair: goes with everything. In 2025, a lot of people are still asking for her 'Rachel' haircut. Do you know that I'd be able to tell you which season of Friends airs on telly just by looking at her haircut? Her look is effortlessly chic, minimalist and casual. And throughout the ten seasons of Friends, there wasn't a single fashion faux pas in my opinion. Even her simplest outfits don't miss. She can wear anything, even though, on the contrary of Carrie, she doesn't take any risks.
It is so hard to choose a favorite outfit, to be honest. I could have made 15 different moodboards, I just love everything she's wearing. She is worthy of her on article on the blog, because she wore over 700 different outfits through the whole show, and she did it perfectly.
Blair Waldorf
Blair Waldorf and her style: OBSESSED! Her looks are always polished, preppy, and quite classic. She is also heavy on designers: Dior, Chanel, Fendi, Bulgari, Valentino — to just name a few. And, sorry, but Serena doesn't stand a chance when it comes to fashion, as she's too messy. Disclaimer, I'm just naming Blair here, but Gossip Girl served looked in all six seasons, it's never really boring!Blair is never casual, as fashion doesn't take days off. Everything is well curated, including the details: designer headbands, gloves, statement tights, gowns, capes... Her style, overall, is clearly a love letter to the old money style, and to me, there's no fashion faux pas, once again! Her looks are also quite dramatic, but powerful, reflecting the person she is. She's elegant, and graceful. And she knows how to match patterns, for sure.
If Blair had been a real person, she'd definitely be the it girl, and everyone's inspiration. She might only be a character, in a TV show, but she is one of my inspirations, for sure. If Blair would wear it? Then yes. If not? I'll have to pass.
Cher Horowitz
If you look closely, her iconic yellow outfit already appears on my school moodboard. Clueless is one of my all time favorite movies, since ever. I grew up dreaming of wearing Cher's iconic yellow plaid suit. To this date, I haven't worn it yet, but it will happen some day.Cher is dressing mostly preppy. There is a pattern in the way she dresses, if you look closely. She is wearing a lot of skirts, with a simple top but either a matching blazer (in terms of colour scheme), or a cardigan. But let's be honest, even the simplest look are giving: the PE outfit or when she's wearing a simple dress.
I remember that I used to dress like that in high school, I'd wear a simple white tee, with a black tank top, a low rise jeans (because it was fashionable when I was in high school), and the latest pair of converse I'd own. Quite frankly, even as an adult, I often wear that, with a blazer. I believe that a good blazer, when well chosen, can elevate any look.
Buffy Summers (and Cordelia Chase)
When I was quite young, I remember watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer with my mom, on Saturday night. It was on right before (or after) Charmed. And every time, I was saying how much I loved Buffy's outfits. Not only she slays — literally, but she's such a it girl. Her style is really 90s minimalist, it's teen fashion, really casual. She wears a lot of tank tops, baby tees, skirts and jeans (or leather trousers). And when she's wearing a leather jacket, you now it's about to go down. Buffy is a freaking badass.
I'll just talk about Cordelia for a second too, because she has an amazing style, and I can't go through this article without mentioning it. In some scene, I'm going to say she can even outshine Buffy. Cordelia has a more preppy style, like teen-royalty, very polished, and that can even seem effortless.
I could go on and on, talking about more characters, like Dionne (Clueless) who is extremely iconic, or Lily (Gossip Girl), but this article would be too long. TV Fashion is one of my favorite subjects and there's a lot of characters that might be way more recent that could be included, but saying they raised me would be lying. Nonetheless, I'd love to exploring more TV Fashion in the future, hoping it's something my readers are into as well.
Who are your fashion icons? What, in their style, make you learn towards them instead of others? If I had to answer this question myself, I'd say my style would be more preppy, and old money, but still minimalist. I also love designer bags, that, in my opinion, can elevate an outfit too.
